Where it all began.
I grew up in Kenya, where keeping my hair shaved or very short was part of my childhood. For much of the first twenty years of my life, that was the only relationship I knew with my hair.
But as I grew older, I became curious. I wanted to know what my natural hair could become if I allowed it to grow.
What I didn't know then was that this curiosity would take me on a journey of discovery, frustration, learning and eventually, the creation of The Textured Tribe.
Learning the hard way.
In November 2018, I got my first box braids for my grandfather's funeral. It was the beginning of a new relationship with my hair.
I believed that keeping my hair braided would automatically make it grow. So I wore braids frequently, hoping to see the length I'd always wanted.
In 2019, I was excited when my hair finally became long enough to tie into a tiny ponytail. It felt like such a big achievement.
But as the year went on, I became frustrated. My progress seemed to slow, and I turned to heat styling to make my hair look longer. I didn't fully understand how my everyday habits could affect my hair.
I was trying so many things without understanding what my hair actually needed. And I began questioning whether my hair was capable of growing at all.
The year everything began to change.
In 2020, the world slowed down. And for the first time, I began to slow down and pay attention to my hair.
During the COVID period, I spent five months in Kisii, Kenya. Away from my usual routines, I started learning how to care for my natural hair differently.
I stopped relying on heat to make my hair look longer. I became more intentional about how I handled it, how I styled it and how I cared for it.
I still remembered the hurtful comments I'd heard about my hair growing up. People had made me feel as though my hair was somehow incapable of growing.
By October, I began noticing progress. It wasn't an overnight transformation. It was the beginning of understanding that my hair needed patience, knowledge and consistent care.
Growing, learning and starting over.
By 2021, I was beginning to see the results of everything I had been learning about my natural hair. I continued experimenting with protective styles and becoming more intentional about how I cared for it.
My sister encouraged me along the way. Slowly, I was beginning to believe that the hair I had once doubted was capable of so much more.
Then came 2022, a year that changed more than just my hair journey. I moved from Kenya to Australia.
Starting a new life in a new country was exciting, but it also came with challenges. Between adjusting to a different environment and finding my feet, my haircare routine wasn't always a priority.
My journey wasn't perfect, and neither was my routine. But the knowledge I had gained stayed with me, even through the seasons when life got busy.
I stopped chasing length and started understanding my hair.
In January 2023, I decided to become more intentional about caring for my natural hair. I wanted to understand what it needed, rather than simply trying to make it grow.
I began researching and experimenting with different oils, herbs and natural ingredients, including rosemary and cloves. I was curious about how these ingredients could fit into a healthy haircare routine.
There was a lot of trial and error. Not everything worked for me, and I still had so much to learn. But slowly, I began understanding the importance of moisture, gentle handling, consistency and patience.
By 2024, I could see how far I'd come. My hair felt like something to celebrate rather than something I needed to change. I was embracing my natural texture, experimenting with styles and growing more confident wearing my hair as it was.
What began as a personal journey was becoming a passion for textured haircare. I wanted other women who had struggled with their hair to experience that same confidence and understanding.
From My Hair Journey to The Textured Tribe.
By 2025, my relationship with my natural hair had completely changed.
The girl who once questioned whether her hair could grow had become a woman who understood her hair, embraced her texture and felt confident wearing it naturally.
Along the way, something unexpected happened. People began noticing my hair. They asked about my routine, the oils I used and what I had done differently. Some even wanted to buy the products I was making for myself.
What began as a personal journey of trial, error and discovery was slowly becoming something much bigger.
I wanted to create more than another haircare brand. I wanted to build something for women like me. Women who had struggled with dryness, breakage, length retention or simply understanding their natural hair.
I wanted us to have access to thoughtfully created haircare products, honest education and a community where our hair was celebrated rather than misunderstood.
Motherhood, Change and Rediscovery.
In 2025, I also became a mother.
Motherhood brought a new chapter of changes, including changes to my hair. I experienced postpartum shedding, and once again, I found myself learning to care for my hair through a different season of life.
It reminded me that a natural hair journey is never truly finished. Our bodies change, our routines change, and sometimes our hair changes with us.
But this time, I approached those changes with something I hadn't always had before: knowledge, patience and a better understanding of my hair.
2026 — Still Growing, Still Becoming.
Today, in 2026, my hair journey continues.
I've experienced progress, setbacks, shedding and regrowth. I've learned that healthy haircare isn't about achieving a particular length overnight.
It's about understanding your hair, caring for it consistently and giving yourself grace through every stage.
When I look at my hair today, I see more than growth.
I see the little girl in Kenya who didn't know what her hair could become. I see the young woman who tried everything without understanding what her hair needed. I see the mother who had to learn to care for herself all over again.
And I see the woman who turned those experiences into a purpose.
Your hair belongs here.
Wherever you are in your natural hair journey, there's a place for you in The Textured Tribe.
